Firefox Extensions installation instructions

  1. Right click on the XPI file and save it to your Desktop.
  2. From Firefox do "File->Open File" (Ctrl-O) to open the XPI file that you just saved to your Desktop.
  3. After the XPI file has finished loading in Firefox, click "Install Now".
  4. Exit Firefox and restart, and the extension should now be loaded.

Note an XPI file is really a standard zip file (WinZip, PkZip, gnu gzip, etc). Do not unzip this before loading it into Firefox, as Firefox needs all components and will do the unzip itself.

On the other hand, if you are interested in reading the source code for a Firefox extension, unzip the XPI file to inspect its contents. Many Firefox extensions allow you to reuse the source code for any purpose, but check the embedded license for details for any particular extension.
