I recently read Things Fall Apart, a classic African novel by Chinua Achebe, and admit to at first being struck by some of the "primitive" beliefs described, such as worshipping trees and rocks.

But then I thought about it.

The Catholic religion I grew up with requires weekly cannibalism of Christ (no, the wine and eucharist are not symbolic of the body and blood, they are the body and blood). Now that's an interesting belief.

And as to the power of religious or spiritual beliefs to heal--

My Mom was "miraculously" cured of myasthenia gravis by a Catholic faith healer, and other people have been healed by paying other types of spiritual healers.

I believe these healers work, so as long as you believe it. And thus, if you believe in praying to rocks, that will probably work too.

Excuse me while I go out to the garden...
